In most cases, you cannot return a vehicle
In BC, in most cases you cannot simply return a recently purchased vehicle. You cannot return a vehicle if you “try it out” and do not like it. There is no such thing as “buyer’s remorse” (regretting your decision). Most of the time, if you bought a vehicle, it is yours.
These are some exceptions to the no return rule:
- If the dealer has an advertised or stated return policy. If so, you must return it according to the policy. Not all dealers have a return policy. The terms of return policies are different for each dealer.
- You may be able to return a vehicle if, at the time of purchase:
- It did not meet the minimum legal standards to drive on the road.
- The dealer did not tell you important information about the vehicle and it cannot be used as designed.
- The dealer did not tell you important information about the vehicle, and it cannot be used in the way you told the dealer you intended to use it.
Each case is unique and whether the law will allow you to return a vehicle will depend on the facts.
Returns for leased vehicles are different than for purchased vehicles. You can cancel a lease within one business day of signing the lease. To cancel, you cannot have signed away this right.
