A dealer must honour the terms of a warranty
A warranty provider must honour the terms of an extended warranty on a vehicle. If you violate the warranty terms, such as by modifying the vehicle, it may void (cancel) the warranty. The extended warranty terms are part of your contract with the dealer. You should be provided with a copy of your warranty, or the policy number associated with the extended warranty from the dealer.
If you purchased a warranty directly from a company, it may be void if:
- You made modifications to the vehicle, such as adding a lift kit.
- You did not maintain the vehicle properly, such as not following the oil change schedule.
- You broke the terms of the warranty in any way, such as selling the vehicle to someone else.
The terms are part of your contract with the warranty company. If you are not sure about the terms of the contract, talk to a lawyer.
Sometimes, a dealer may fail to pay the warranty company or register your warranty. If this happens, contact the dealer immediately. BC law requires the warranty company to honor the warranty. To enforce the warranty, show the warranty company a receipt or the warranty policy the dealer gave to you.
